Signal Boost: The Call to Help Election Officials

March 2024

AMPU Extends EOLDN’s Reach, Boosts Attorney Recruitment

This month, we want to highlight A More Perfect Union: The Jewish Partnership for Democracy (AMPU), as one of our steadfast partners. A More Perfect Union’s mission and goal is to support and mobilize a growing network of Jewish organizations working to protect democracy and free and fair elections.

Starting in 2022, AMPU recognized “the great importance of experienced, dedicated, impartial officials overseeing our elections” and committed to support organizations protecting election workers by “mobilizing to ensure [election officials] have the support they need to safely and effectively fulfill their duties.”

Through the Jewish Partnership for Democracy, AMPU has upheld that commitment by recruiting a steady flow of new volunteers. AMPU has engaged its network members to contact congregations and Jewish institutions around the country, to assist EOLDN with its mission of finding attorneys willing to give pro bono guidance to beleaguered election officials. EOLDN has matched election officials with several attorneys identified by the Jewish Partnership network.

EOLDN is thankful for such a dependable partner organization that understands the importance of protecting election officials in order to continue to have free, fair, safe, and accessible elections.

EOs Report Smooth Sailing in Primaries So Far

The first months of the 2024 primary season demonstrate a promising trend of calmer elections than in recent years. States’ election administration issues have been, overall, run of the mill and resolved according to established processes. The voters cast ballots largely without incident. This week, additional states held primaries and caucuses. Hopefully, orderly elections will prevail, but the remainder of the 2024 election cycle, the General Election in particular, is expected to magnify already intense and hostile scrutiny of election officials

EOLDN stands by to support election officials by connecting them with free legal and communications assistance.

Partner Updates

We the Action, EOLDN’s longstanding partner who was featured in EOLDN’s November newsletter, continues to connect us with attorneys eager to give legal guidance to election officials. We the Action recently highlighted EOLDN as a featured partner in its 2023 Impact Report.

What's Happening at CEIR

Supreme Court: States Cannot Determine Federal Office Eligibility Under 14th Amendment

David Becker, Executive Director of The Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR), joined CBS News to reflect on the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision that former President Donald Trump will remain on Colorado’s ballot. Because the Court held that states are not allowed to disqualify federal candidates under Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment, Trump will stay on the ballot in all 50 states. What is EOLDN?

The Election Official Legal Defense Network is the brainchild of former Presidential Commission on Election Administration co-chairs Bob Bauer and Ben Ginsberg. David Becker, Executive Director of CEIR and an elections expert, leads EOLDN.

EOLDN offers two services in support of election officials:

Pro Bono Legal Assistance: This service matches experienced pro bono attorneys with election officials who have been harassed and intimidated for simply doing their jobs of running fair elections.

Free Communications Assistance: This service matches election offices with free communications assistance to combat mis-, dis-, and mal-information about elections in their communities, educate voters, and provide general strategy support.
