How one clerk is meeting this moment with deep transparency

April 2025

Meet Molly Fitzpatrick: The innovative clerk and bakery connoisseur making Boulder County elections work

The election law experts and state and local-level election officials of EOLDN’s advisory board are crucial partners in our work. They are some of our greatest champions, spreading the word about EOLDN and guiding its future in our ever-changing environment. Many of them are changemakers in the elections space, exemplifying ingenuity and adaptability as they build confidence in election administration in their communities. Boulder County, CO Clerk and Recorder and EOLDN advisory board member Molly Fitzpatrick has done exactly that in the 11 elections she has overseen since 2018.

For much of her time as clerk, elections have been under attack. Fitzpatrick has worked diligently to, as she said, “meet this moment with deep transparency and accountability.” Her office welcomes questions and has established itself as a reliable resource for everyone in the community. Part of Fitzpatrick’s emphasis on transparency meant giving citizens a front-row seat to observe the process themselves. Her office opened the county’s ballot processing center to the public, drawing 600 visitors in 2024.

Fitzpatrick is “driven to remain in the elections field, “despite the intense scrutiny on her profession, because she believes we are at a “pivotal moment in history,” and it is “crucial that we have folks who are committed to standing firm against these threats to ensure that every eligible voter always has the opportunity to cast their ballot.”

When she is not running elections and overseeing the county motor vehicle and recording divisions, Fitzpatrick “love[s] trying out bakeries!” She and her family have been known to travel far and wide to find the best bread.

Fitzpatrick believes we must protect and preserve the right to vote. To do that, we must also protect the election officials that facilitate democracy. If you’re an election official who has faced threats or intimidation and may benefit from legal assistance, we encourage you to submit a request for help on our website.

Bar associations double down on support for the rule of law

“We stand with our courts and the legal profession as a bulwark against these threats. They must stop.”

— ABA President William R. Bay

EOLDN relies on volunteer attorneys to defend harassed election officials, regardless of the political climate. With the legal profession under attack, attorneys and organizations, including the American Bar Association, have taken a stand for the rule of law. At this critical moment, EOLDN applauds the bravery and dedication of these leaders in the legal field.

What's happening at CEIR

CEIR Executive Director David Becker explains that only the states and Congress—not the president— have constitutional authority to set the rules for elections. The president’s March 25 executive order, which bypasses Congress and amounts to an attempted federal takeover of elections, now faces multiple legal challenges. Becker told CBS that courts are likely to find challenges to the executive order to be “very credible.” On C-SPAN, Becker reiterated that he believes “it’s very unlikely that most of, if any, of this executive order goes into law.”

What is EOLDN?

EOLDN matches experienced pro bono attorneys with election officials who have been harassed and intimidated on the job or who fear targeting simply for doing their jobs.
