EOLDN condemns presidential candidate's threat, stands by to support election workers
September 2024
As a presidential candidate threatens prosecution, EOLDN stands by to support election workers
Last Saturday, election workers throughout the country faced another high-profile attack. A presidential candidate posted on Truth Social, threatening to prosecute a wide range of people, including so-called “corrupt” election officials. He promised to impose long prison sentences on an unprecedented number of perceived enemies.
The steady, thorough work of election administrators has withstood court cases, investigations, and public scrutiny. The candidate’s latest attempt to target election administrators has immediate impact, regardless of the outcome of the presidential contest. As Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes said, these comments “give the potential for bad actors to take them as a call to arms. We need to protect our election officials and our poll workers. We need to be prepared for just about anything.”
David Becker of the Center for Election Innovation & Research said, “I can’t begin to describe the abnormality and disturbing behavior that would cause a presidential candidate, a former president, to threaten public servants with mass arrest.”
Seth Bluestein, a Republican member of Philadelphia’s Board of Elections, said, “Every election official I know will be focused on doing their job well, which unfortunately includes preparing for threats of violence.”
Election workers, as you prepare for the coming months, we hope that you and your colleagues will not need our services. But, if you do, please don’t hesitate to reach out to EOLDN. Our nationwide network of experienced pro bono attorneys is standing by to help you.

Election workers and law enforcement
Ensuring election safety and security is a top priority for election workers. EOLDN provides critical support to election officials and poll workers facing harassment or threats while administering elections. Local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are also key partners in the effort to safeguard election workers and secure polling locations. Building relationships with law enforcement before Election Day can significantly enhance the protection and security of elections.

What's happening at CEIR
The security and expansion of voter registration over time
The Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR) released a new report on The Expansion of Innovative Voter Registration Methods. Since 2000, states have developed and implemented innovative voter registration methods, including automatic voter registration, online voter registration, and same-day voter registration. The report finds that, in 2024, 90% of voting-age citizens will have access to at least one of these methods.
CEIR also recently released a preliminary report on voter registration database (VRDB) security. “Securing Voter Registration Databases: 2024 Survey Preliminary Results” finds that states are implementing best practices to secure their VRDBs and are in a better position than ever to handle cyber threats.
Counting the Vote: A Firing Line Special with Margaret Hoover
CEIR Executive Director David Becker was featured alongside several EOLDN advisory board members on the PBS Firing Line special “Counting the Vote.” The special shed light on the vote-counting processes in key states and emphasized the integrity of the electoral process, setting voters’ expectations for November.
Why voters should listen to public officials this November
This week on Face the Nation, CEIR’s David Becker encouraged voters to make a plan for voting and to seek official sources of election information.
